B-2 Visa

This page gives an overview of B2 visa, a temporary U.S. visa suitable for
pleasure travelers
Definition of B-2 Visa:
B-2 visitor visa is a non-immigrant
(temporary) visa issued to the individuals
who wish to enter the United
States for tourism, or medical visits. It is issued in either single entry or
multiple entry formats. B2 visa holders are permitted to stay in the U.S. for
not more than one year. Extension is allowed in increments of not more than six
months each.
- people who wish to enter the U.S. for pleasure, vacation and tourism
purposes;
- individuals desiring to the U.S. for medical treatment;
- people visiting friends and relatives in the U.S.;
- persons coming to participate in the conventions of social organizations;
- people coming to the US to marry a US citizen or green card holder;
- individuals who participate in sports, musical, and other events or
contests, in the United States without remuneration.
People who enter the U.S. on B-2 visa are issued with the arrival-departure
record (Form I-94). The form I-94 is a small white card which gives an idea
about the arrival date and location of entry into the United States. In
addition, it also reveals the date by which you must depart the United States.
In order to qualify for B-2 visa,
- the applicant must prove that they remain in the U.S. only for a specific,
limited period;
- the applicant must provide evidence that they have compelling ties to the
home country to which you do not intend to abandon.
Benefits of U.S. Visitor Visa:
On B-2 visa for leisure or tourism:
- The applicants are permitted to change status to other longer-term visa
while in the US as a visitor (see
Adjustment of Status).
- No sponsor is required to file an application for tourist visa.
- The applicants are permitted to enroll in short course of study.
- The B-2 visa is simple and easy to obtain.
- Spouses and children under 21 may also receive B-2 visa status.
Limitations:
On B-2 visa, the applicants
- are not allowed to accept employment during their stay in the U.S.
- are not permitted to enroll in a full course of study.
Documents for B2 Visitor Visa:
- a valid passport or other valid travel documents;
- a completed and signed application form (DS-156);
- two photographs for each applicant;
- evidence of financial ability for all expected expenses for the duration
of the visit;
- evidence of compelling social and economic ties abroad;
- a completed and signed form DS-157 (Supplemental Nonimmigrant Visa
Application) if the applicant is a male aged between 16 and 46;
- letter from friends, relatives or others in the United States inviting the
foreign nationals and detailing the length and purpose of the stay (if you are
traveling to the U.S. for pleasure);
- statement from a doctor or institution concerning the proposed medical
treatment (if you are traveling to the U.S. for medical treatment); and
- visa application fee.
