The CGFNS Certification Program is designed for foreign educated nurses and health care professionals who wish to be employed in the United States. The CGFNS (Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools) is an immigration-neutral, non-profit organization situated in Philadelphia. CGFNS certification ensures that nurses and healthcare professionals educated in foreign nations are qualified to meet licensure, immigration and other practice requirements needed in the USA. The US Boards of Nursing require two major programs for licensing foreign educated nurses. These programs include Certification Program (CP) and Credentials Evaluation Service (CES).

Certification Program

This CGFNS preparation program involves a comprehensive analysis of the education, registration, and licensure credentials of the applicant. CGFNS Qualifying Exam that tests nursing knowledge is its import part. The program also pre-screens nurses for English language proficiency (TOEFL).

The qualifying exam is an objective test containing multiple choice questions. It is usually conducted two times a year (February and August) on the same day all around the world.

Credentials Evaluation Service

This preparation service includes a comprehensive analysis of the candidate’s credentials to compare them to U.S. standards for education and licensing requirements. It is also a confirmation of credentials process.

Once all the above requirements have been successfully completed, the applicant is granted a CGFNS Certificate. In general, the CGFNS program for nurses is applicable for first-level, general nurses (commonly called registered or professional nurses) who are educated and licensed abroad. It is also a good forerunner to performance on the NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examinations). Either NCLEX or CGFNS is crucial to begin the immigrant visa process in the US.
