Immigrant Visa Interview: General Information

When filing your application for an American green card, you will be asked to pass an interviewGreen Card Interview - green card interview. Mostly, those who are trying to obtain a green card through marriage require a personal interview. The interview questions will be about your life, work, interests and other doings. Green card interview gives the INS officer a chance to get to know you.   • Appointment letter;

  • Application for green card and alien registration form DS-230

  • Marriage certificate, if applicable;
  • Divorce or Death certificate;
  • Police certificate (required for immigrant visa applicant aged 16 years or older)

The documents required for green card interview differ from post to post. Therefore you may have to submit some additional documents if USCIS requests them. The documents you submit is in a foreign language, then it must be accompanied by a translation in English.

The documents to be submitted will be listed in your appointment letter, send by USCIS. Besides, the appointment letter contains when and where you should appear for your immigrant visa interview. If you fail to bring any of the necessary documents, your case may be delayed or denied.

Remember: Not to miss your green card interview. In case, if you have to miss your interview, you should inform the concerned USCIS office. Also, you should ask to have your interview rescheduled. Rescheduling green card interview may add several months to the issuance of permanent resident card. If you don’t contact USCIS to schedule your interview within 1 year after USCIS closes your case, then your application will be denied. USCIS will not notify you if your case is closed.

Preparation Tips:

  • You should not arrive more than 15 to 30 minutes in advance;
  • It would be better if you already know where your local USCIS office is located;
  • If anything in the application is missed, then mention it during the green card interview;
  • Always tell the truth as they have the entire file of your immigration history;
  • After the interview they may ask you to sign the application. You have to write your entire name in cursive letters in the designated area.
