Also known as Permanent Resident Card, Green Card is an identification card for a lawful permanent resident (LPR) of the United States of America. With a legal green card,

• You get the right to legally live in the US.
• You are authorized to work legally in the United States and you may start a business.

Renewal Process

If you were issued a green card with a validity period of 10 years, and is about to expire, then you have to renew it. You need application to replace permanent residence card (I-90 Form) in order to apply for the renewal. Green Card Renewal Requirements:

Along with the form, you have to submit the documents such as

• Personal identification (a state driver’s license or identification card, or a valid passport);
• Three recent passport photographs;
• Alien registration number;
• Photocopies of the front and back of the expired or expiring card;
• Evidence of last departure from the U.S (airline ticket or boarding pass); and
• Renewal application fee, to be paid in dollars, euro equivalent or by credit card (those who cannot afford to pay the application fee may apply for a waiver)

If all the information you provided is complete and correct, then the immigration authorities will affix a sticker to the expiring or expired green card. The sticker constitutes a temporary evidence of their lawful permanent resident status. If your temporary proof of status expires before obtaining the new green card, then you should go to your local INS District or Sub-Office for getting the new temporary documentation. If you are outside of the United States at the time of expiration, then you should contact the nearest American Consulate, USCIS office, or Port of Entry, before filing the Form I-90.

What application form should you file?

LPRs whose green card is about to expire with in the next 6 months should renew their cards by filling the immigration Form I-90.
