Obtaining a new green card is time consuming. So, the immigrant authorities will
first issue a temporary proof of status. The temporary proof of status is issued
by stamping an applicant's passport. For those whose passport is lost or stolen,
USCIS will issue them a temporary document with photograph, valid for one year.
