US Family Visas
A Basic Overview

This area covers more specific information on various US Family Visas

A US visa is necessary for any non-citizen to enter theUS Family Visas country. There are many types of visas, primarily broken into two major categories; 1. a non-immigrant visa (temporary visa) and 2. an immigrant visa (permanent visa). Broken down further, a foreign individual may be authorized to work, attend school, receive specialized training, obtain medical treatment, or stay indefinitely. Certain visas permits a person to change or "adjust status", while in the United States.

Green Cards (immigrant visas) are for those who plan to permanently reside in the U.S. This identification document for a lawful permanent resident (LPR) can be obtained through close family members, employers, asylum after one year, or the diversity lottery (popularly known as Green Card Lottery).

Visas are always available for immediate family members of U.S. citizens, including spouse, parent and minor child.

Individuals who have to wait for visas to become available include:

  • Other family members of U.S. citizens, for example, sibling, son or daughter over 21 years of age).
  • Immediate family of Lawful Permanent Residents (Green Card Holders), including spouse, child, unmarried son or daughter.

The U.S. Immigration Laws have certain requirements for non-immigrant visa holders, green card holders, and U.S. citizens to bring their alien relatives on family visa. The following section contains more accurate information on the different family visa types.
