Student Visas
(Studying in the USA)
This section explains what you will need to accomplish if you want to
travel to the United States to study, and what the U.S. immigration rules say
A brief overview of US student visas:
The U.S. Government permits people who are not American citizens or
U.S. green
card holders to study
in the USA. Any person who is not a U.S. resident can
apply to study in America. The person has to obtain a student visa before he or
she can start a course of study in the U.S.
In general, a student visa permits the foreign nationals to engage in American
language schools, high schools, universities, and other institutions of higher
education in the U.S. Each year, thousands of students come to the U.S. from
around the world to study and advance their skills. To obtain a student visa,
the applicant must initially be admitted to a U.S. school or university before
commencing the visa procedure. The foreign students can live in the country for
as long as they are enrolled in.
The U.S. Government has a number of programs that provide many learning
opportunities to overseas students. For further information on US higher
education opportunities, visit the Department of State Education USA website.
Types of student visa:
You may undertake a short course of study of less than 18 hours per week on a
visitor visa (or tourist visa). If you intend to study for more than 18 hours
per week, you must apply for a student visa. Three major categories of U.S.
student visas include F-1, J-1, and M-1 visas. To know about visa application
procedures, forms, and more, click on links below……….
F-1 Student Visa: Suitable for academic studies or language
training programs. This non-immigrant visa is issued for foreign students who
wish to study or conduct research at an accredited U.S. college or university.
J-1 Student visa: Appropriate for academic studies as an
exchange visitor. This visa is reserved for non-immigrants who will be engaging
in an exchange visitor program in the country. The J-1 visa is the major visa
for educational and cultural exchange programs.
M-1 Student Visa: Suitable for nonacademic or
vocational studies. This temporary visa is available to people who want to study
or train at a nonacademic institution in the United States.
The application process is almost identical for these visas. However, there are
some differences in terms of eligibility and other restrictions.
